Delve into the epic tale of Gilgamesh and its meaning through an evening of readings and conversation with Poet Laureate Simon Armitage and Keeper of the Middle East Department Dr Paul Collins.
In Gilgamesh: A New Verse Translation(Opens in new window) (2026), Armitage captures its timeless and immersive power. The Epic of Gilgamesh is one of the oldest surviving literary works at over 4,000 years old. It tells the story of Gilgamesh's adventures with the wild man Enkidu, as well as his arduous journey to the ends of the earth in quest of the Babylonian Noah and the secret of immortality. The poem explores the timeless themes of family, friendship, power, loss and what it means to be human.
Join Armitage and Collins for a fascinating discussion and readings from this powerful retelling.
After the event, Armitage will be signing copies of Gilgamesh: A New Verse Translation(Opens in new window). You can purchase a copy for £13 (RRP £14.99) alongside your ticket for collection after the event. The book will also be available to purchase at the Great Court bookshop.
